Seat availability FAQs
How do I check seat availability for a train?
Enter the 5-digit train number, choose your boarding and destination stations, pick the journey date, class and quota, then tap Check availability. You get the status for your date and the following days, plus the fare breakup for that class and quota.
What do AVL, RAC and WL mean?
AVL (or AVAILABLE) followed by a number means that many confirmed berths or seats are open. RAC means Reservation Against Cancellation: you can board and share a berth, and a full berth is allotted if a cancellation happens. WL is a waiting list; the number is your position, and the ticket confirms only if enough passengers ahead of you cancel. Variants such as GNWL, RLWL, PQWL and TQWL are waiting lists for the general, remote-location, pooled and Tatkal quotas.
Which class and quota should I choose?
Class is the kind of accommodation (Sleeper, AC 3-Tier, AC Chair Car and so on) and only the classes a train actually runs will return results. Quota decides which pool of seats you are checking: General (GN) for ordinary booking, Tatkal (TQ) for last-minute booking, and special quotas such as Ladies, Senior Citizen, Defence or Lower Berth for eligible passengers.
How far ahead can I check availability?
Availability follows each train's advance reservation period. Most trains open for booking about two months ahead, a few have shorter windows, and the foreign tourist quota opens much earlier. For a date that isn't open yet the railways return no availability, and the tool says so rather than guessing.
Why do I see no availability for today or a very near date?
Once the reservation chart is prepared, or the train has already left your boarding station, new bookings close and the railways stop returning a status. Check the chart preparation time tool to see when that happens for your train.
What is the prediction shown beside a waitlist or RAC status?
When the feed supplies a prediction for a waitlisted or RAC status, it is shown next to that date. It is an estimate based on how similar tickets have moved, not a guarantee. If you already hold a ticket, the PNR status and prediction tool gives a confirmation signal for your exact booking.
Is the fare shown the final price?
The fare breakup is what the railways return for the selected train, class and quota. Dynamic pricing, GST and catering charges differ between trains and can change before you pay, so treat it as a close estimate and confirm the total at booking.
Can I book a ticket here?
No. RailAI shows availability and fares so you can decide; tickets are booked on IRCTC or the Indian Railways apps. RailAI is not affiliated with IRCTC or Indian Railways.
