Check Indian Railway chart preparation time with RailAI and find out when your train’s first and final reservation charts are expected to be prepared. Whether you have a confirmed ticket, RAC ticket or waiting-list booking, understanding the train chart preparation time can help you plan your journey with greater confidence.
Indian Railways prepares reservation charts before train departure to allocate seats and berths and update passenger booking status. Under the revised charting schedule reported from December 2025, the first chart is generally targeted for the previous evening or at least 10 hours before departure, depending on the train’s scheduled departure time.
Train chart preparation is the process by which Indian Railways finalizes passenger reservation details and allocates available seats or berths before a train departs.
During railway chart preparation, the reservation system updates confirmed bookings, RAC passengers, waiting-list positions, cancellations and berth allocations according to railway rules. The railway reservation chart helps passengers understand whether their booking has been confirmed and which coach or berth has been assigned.
For passengers using IRCTC, chart preparation is particularly important because a booking showing WL (Waiting List) or RAC (Reservation Against Cancellation) may change as seats become available.
The Indian Railways chart preparation time depends on the scheduled departure time at the relevant charting station. Under the revised timing instructions reported in December 2025, the first reservation chart is preferably prepared according to the schedule below. The Railway Board’s letter dated 16 December 2025 is reported in railway correspondence as changing preferred first-chart targets to 8:00 PM the previous night or at least 10 hours before departure. The official July 2025 circular used earlier targets of 9:00 PM and 8 hours and is superseded.
These are target timings, not a guarantee that every train’s chart will appear at the exact minute. Charting arrangements can also depend on the relevant originating or remote charting station.
To understand the chart preparation time of a train, consider the following examples. They illustrate the scheduling rule rather than confirming the release time of any particular train’s chart.
| Scheduled departure | Estimated first chart time |
|---|---|
| 6:00 AM Monday | 8:00 PM Sunday |
| 10:00 AM Monday | 8:00 PM Sunday |
| 1:00 PM Monday | 8:00 PM Sunday |
| 4:00 PM Monday | 6:00 AM Monday |
| 8:00 PM Monday | 10:00 AM Monday |
| 11:00 PM Monday | 1:00 PM Monday |
| 2:00 AM Monday | 4:00 PM Sunday |

You can use the RailAI Chart Preparation Time Tool to understand the expected timing of your train’s reservation chart.
Use the calculator at the top of this page.
Search by train number or name, or switch to manual entry and provide the scheduled origin departure time.
Choose the origin journey date, since the first chart can fall on the previous calendar day.
The tool applies the departure-time bands to work out the expected timings.
Check the estimated first chart preparation time and the final chart guidance.
Confirm your current booking status using the official railway PNR enquiry service.
The RailAI calculator is intended to make chart timing easier to understand. Actual chart preparation status must come from an authorized, up-to-date railway data source. An estimated chart release time is not the same as a confirmed chart release event.
The chart preparation status tells you whether the reservation chart for the relevant train and charting location has been prepared. You may encounter two broad situations:
The relevant reservation chart has not yet been finalized or is not yet shown as available. Booking status may still change.
The system indicates that the relevant chart has been finalized. Check your PNR for your latest recorded reservation and berth information.
For official verification, use the IRCTC website or the Indian Railways enquiry website.
Indian Railways normally uses two chart preparation stages: the first reservation chart and the second, or final, reservation chart. A calculated time is a planning estimate, not a guarantee that the chart was prepared at that exact moment.
The second chart accounts for subsequent eligible bookings, cancellations and remaining accommodation. It is typically prepared closer to departure. Railway guidance has described the second chart window as approximately 30 to 5 minutes before the scheduled or rescheduled departure. More recent reporting describes preparation around 30 minutes before departure. The exact operational cut-off should be checked rather than assumed.
| Feature | First chart | Second / final chart |
|---|---|---|
| Main purpose | Initial reservation allocation | Final booking updates |
| Preparation | Earlier, under advance charting rules | Near departure |
| Waiting-list movement | Can occur | Further eligible changes may occur |
| Coach and berth details | Often become available | Can reflect subsequent adjustments |
| Vacant accommodation | May become available for current booking | Remaining positions are finalized |
The first chart is the main allocation stage: it updates confirmed and RAC bookings, available accommodation and eligible waiting-list movements, and its earlier preparation helps passengers decide whether to proceed or explore alternatives. The second chart reflects later changes closer to departure. A calculated target does not indicate that either chart has actually been published.
A train can reach your boarding station much later than it leaves its origin. This calculator is explicitly an origin-based estimate; railway procedures may also chart at remote locations along the route. If you board at an intermediate station, do not assume your chart timing is calculated from your boarding time. Check the relevant charting location.
Cancellations, allocations, remote charting and operational delays can affect results. This calculator does not retrieve live charts, ticket status or actual chart preparation events. Check official railway/IRCTC information for consequential decisions.
Train running status shows operational information such as whether a train is on time, delayed or approaching a station. Chart preparation status shows whether the reservation chart has been prepared. A train can have a prepared chart and still be delayed, and live running status does not confirm that your reserved seat has been allotted.
An estimated chart release time is not the same as a confirmed chart release event. The timings are targets, not a guarantee that every train’s chart appears at the exact minute, and charting arrangements can depend on the relevant originating or remote charting station.
For complete journey planning you may need both: the expected chart timing to know when to check your PNR, and live running status to know whether the train itself is on schedule.
2026 chart preparation estimates use the origin-departure bands described above. Always confirm official live enquiries before travel.
After chart preparation, passengers should check their updated train PNR status. A previously waitlisted ticket may become confirmed or RAC if accommodation becomes available and the booking qualifies under railway allocation rules. However, chart preparation does not guarantee ticket confirmation. Some bookings may remain waitlisted, while others receive a coach and berth allocation.
Confirmed passengers retain a reservation subject to railway conditions. Coach and berth information depends on booking and chart allocation.
RAC normally allows travel with reserved seating. A full berth may become available when accommodation is released, but cannot be promised.
Fully waitlisted e-tickets are treated differently from mixed-status and counter tickets. Check actual PNR, ticket type and applicable IRCTC policy.
For e-ticket rules, consult IRCTC’s published waitlist guidance.
Your Passenger Name Record (PNR) is the booking reference associated with your railway reservation. Checking your PNR status before and after chart preparation is useful because it helps you identify changes in your reservation. Common PNR booking statuses include:
| Status | Meaning |
|---|---|
| CNF | Confirmed reservation |
| RAC | Reservation Against Cancellation |
| WL | Waiting List |
| GNWL | General Waiting List |
| RLWL | Remote Location Waiting List |
| PQWL | Pooled Quota Waiting List |
Yes, PNR status can change as eligible allocations are processed. A waiting-list booking may move to RAC or confirmed status, and berth information may become available. However, confirmation depends on factors such as cancellations, quota, booking position and accommodation availability.
If all passengers on an IRCTC e-ticket remain waitlisted after chart preparation, their names are dropped from the reservation chart and they cannot board using that booking. IRCTC provides for the automatic cancellation and applicable refund process for fully waitlisted e-tickets. Different treatment may apply when a booking contains a mixture of confirmed, RAC and waitlisted passengers.
A waiting-list ticket may receive an eligible allocation during the first or final charting process, but this is not guaranteed. Confirmation depends on the availability of accommodation and the railway reservation allocation process. For example, if passengers cancel their reservations, seats or berths may become available for allocation to eligible RAC or waiting-list passengers.
Passengers should check their latest PNR status instead of relying entirely on the booking status displayed at the time of ticket purchase. A fully waitlisted e-ticket that has been dropped from the chart does not become valid for boarding merely because a seat appears empty.
Tatkal chart preparation time generally follows the charting schedule applicable to the train rather than a separate charting clock for Tatkal tickets. Tatkal is a reservation booking category, whereas chart preparation is the process of finalizing train reservations.
If you booked a Tatkal ticket, check its PNR status after chart preparation to confirm your allocation details. Confirmed Tatkal tickets also have different cancellation and refund conditions from ordinary confirmed tickets. Do not assume that standard cancellation charges apply to every Tatkal reservation.
Passengers frequently search for cancellation after chart preparation, especially when travel plans change unexpectedly. Chart preparation and cancellation deadlines are related, but they are not identical. You should not assume that having time left before the second chart means your confirmed ticket still qualifies for a refund.
Indian Railways announced revised cancellation windows in March 2026, replacing the earlier 48-hour, 12-hour and 4-hour thresholds for ordinary confirmed-ticket refunds with 72-hour, 24-hour and 8-hour thresholds.
For ordinary confirmed tickets under the revised rules:
| Time before scheduled departure | Cancellation deduction |
|---|---|
| More than 72 hours | Applicable minimum flat charge |
| 72 to 24 hours | 25% of fare, subject to minimum charges |
| 24 to 8 hours | 50% of fare, subject to minimum charges |
| Less than 8 hours | No ordinary cancellation refund |
These rules have exceptions, including certain ticket categories, train cancellations and special refund circumstances. For exact eligibility, consult the current IRCTC rules for your ticket.
The available cancellation and refund procedure depends on the ticket type, applicable deadline and reason for cancellation. IRCTC’s published help material has historically described Ticket Deposit Receipt (TDR) claims for certain cases after chart preparation. Railways also announced changes to simplify refunds in 2026, so passengers should use the current options shown for their booking rather than rely on an older TDR procedure.
Refund eligibility after chart preparation depends on applicable railway rules and the circumstances of the journey. A fully waitlisted e-ticket, an ordinary confirmed ticket cancelled too late, and a ticket affected by a cancelled train are not treated in the same way. For reliable refund decisions, check the latest IRCTC e-ticket cancellation guidance and the options provided against your booking.
Indian Railway chart preparation gives passengers greater visibility into their reservation status before travelling. Its main benefits include:
Passengers can find out their reservation position earlier.
Waiting-list and RAC passengers get updated information.
Confirmed passengers can review available allocation details.
Passengers can consider other arrangements when confirmation is unlikely or unavailable.
Eligible vacant berths may be made available for current booking before the final chart.
RailAI is designed to help passengers understand railway chart preparation timings without manually calculating them from departure schedules.
