Distance
The applicable chargeable distance between railway stations. Your boarding and destination stations identify the journey distance, but the applicable fare table determines the actual basic fare for that train and class.
Want to know the train ticket fare before booking your journey? Use the RailAI Train Fare Calculator to check or estimate Indian Railway ticket prices between stations and understand the cost of travelling in different train classes.
Planning estimates only. This calculator does not read live IRCTC fares or book tickets.
Pick a popular train or enter any five-digit train number. Train details come from RailAI's existing database.

RailAI is independent of Indian Railways and IRCTC. Train distances are drawn from existing RailAI timetable records where available. Final fare and availability must be checked with the official booking provider.
The basics
Whether you are looking for the Sleeper Class fare, 3AC ticket price, 2AC railway fare, Vande Bharat ticket price or Tatkal charges, RailAI helps you plan your train travel budget more easily. Indian Railway ticket fares depend on multiple factors, including the train, distance, journey date, travel class, reservation quota and applicable charges.
A train fare calculator is an online tool that helps passengers check or estimate the cost of railway travel between two stations. Instead of manually researching train ticket prices for multiple routes and classes, passengers can use a railway fare enquiry tool to understand the expected travel cost.
For example, if you are travelling from New Delhi to Mumbai, the ticket price may differ depending on whether you choose Sleeper Class, AC 3 Tier, AC 2 Tier, First AC or a different train service. The RailAI Indian Railway Fare Calculator is designed to make train fare enquiries easier and more convenient.
Fare rules explained
The final ticket fare is not simply distance multiplied by a single national rate. It depends on the applicable Passenger Fare Table, travel class, type of train, booking quota and additional charges. Therefore, two trains operating between the same stations may have different ticket prices.
The applicable chargeable distance between railway stations. Your boarding and destination stations identify the journey distance, but the applicable fare table determines the actual basic fare for that train and class.
Ordinary, Mail/Express, Superfast or premium train service. Two trains between the same stations can have different ticket prices.
Sleeper, Second Sitting, AC 3 Tier, AC 2 Tier, First AC and other available classes each follow their own fare structure.
General, Tatkal, Premium Tatkal or another eligible quota. Tatkal premiums and other quota pricing can add to the base fare.
Relevant fare revisions or train-specific pricing may apply.
Reservation fees, superfast charges, applicable surcharges, GST and other permitted fees. Taxable components and booking fees can change the total, and IRCTC's final quote remains authoritative.
Using the tool
To check your train fare, follow these steps:
The calculator can help you understand the cost of travelling between stations and compare the fare options it supports. It does not take a journey date or fetch a live fare, so for official fare verification use the Indian Railways fare enquiry service or IRCTC before completing your booking.
For a useful breakdown, retrieve your class-specific basic fare from the official booking flow and enter it in the calculator. If you only have a distance, use the quick illustration to explore scenarios, not to budget an exact ticket price.
Latest fare rules
Indian Railways periodically revises passenger fares to reflect operating costs and railway service requirements. A significant fare revision took effect on 26 December 2025, following an earlier revision in July 2025.
Under the December revision, several passenger train categories had their basic fares adjusted, while suburban services and season tickets were excluded from fare increases. The Ministry of Railways also confirmed that reservation fees, superfast charges, GST applicability and fare-rounding rules remained unchanged under that revision.
| Category | December 2025 revision |
|---|---|
| Suburban services | No increase |
| Season tickets | No increase |
| Second Class Ordinary, up to 215 km | No increase |
| Sleeper and First Class Ordinary | Applicable increase of 1 paisa per km |
| Mail/Express AC and non-AC classes | Applicable increase of 2 paise per km |
| Reservation and superfast charges | No change under the revision |
These figures describe the announced fare adjustments, not the full fare payable by passengers. They are increases to existing fares, not total basic fares per kilometre.
The revision applies to tickets booked on or after 26 December 2025. Tickets purchased before that date were not subject to the new increase solely because the journey occurred later. The correct price for a specific train must be determined from the relevant fare table or railway reservation system.
Railway Board Commercial Circular No. 24 of 2025 is the source for the revision. Read the official Railway Board circular →
Routes and distance
One of the most useful functions of a train ticket fare enquiry tool is checking fares between a departure station and a destination station. For example, passengers commonly search for:
The actual fare on any of these routes depends on the train, class, quota and applicable charges. A direct route distance calculation is not always enough to determine the correct railway fare; the railway's chargeable distance and fare structure should be used.
Indian Railway fares are influenced by distance, but they are not calculated using one universal fare-per-kilometre rate for every passenger train. Different fare tables, train categories and classes apply.
For example, a Sleeper Class Mail/Express fare and a premium train's Executive Chair Car fare cannot be calculated accurately by multiplying the same rate by distance.
The December 2025 revision included incremental changes measured in paise per kilometre for specified services. Those increases should not be confused with the total fare-per-kilometre rate.
The calculator's Quick distance illustration multiplies the distance by an assumed rate that you choose. It is a way to explore scenarios, not an official class rate. For a reliable result, use the official basic fare for your train and class.
Travel classes
Sleeper Class (SL) is a commonly used non-air-conditioned reserved class on Indian Railways. Passengers often choose it when they want a relatively economical way to travel long distances.
The final fare may include the applicable basic journey fare, reservation charges and any relevant train-specific surcharge, and it depends on the route, chargeable distance, train category and quota. Tatkal bookings can include an additional Tatkal charge. To find the Sleeper ticket price for your route, use the RailAI fare tool and verify the result through official railway fare enquiry.
AC 3 Tier (3A) provides air-conditioned reserved accommodation and is widely available on long-distance trains. The 3AC ticket price is generally higher than Sleeper Class because it provides a different level of accommodation and service. The final fare depends on the train, distance, quota, applicable taxes and charges.
No. The 3AC ticket price can vary between trains, even for a similar route, because fare structures and train-specific pricing differ. Premium services and dynamically priced reservations may not follow the same final fare as conventional Mail/Express services. You can compare 3A with Sleeper, 2A or other classes in the calculator.
AC 2 Tier (2A) is an air-conditioned sleeper class offering a different berth arrangement from AC 3 Tier. Passengers searching for 2AC train ticket fare should select the correct train and journey date before comparing prices. The cost depends on the relevant base fare and any applicable reservation, surcharge and tax components.
For comparable travel on the same train and route, AC 2 Tier is generally more expensive than AC 3 Tier. However, special pricing and train-specific conditions can affect comparisons, so review the actual fare quoted for each available class.
First AC (1A) is among the higher-priced reserved accommodation classes on Indian Railways. Fares vary according to the train, route and applicable charges. Not every train offers First AC, so check the available accommodation classes first.
For an accurate First AC price, select the appropriate train, source station, destination station and journey date in the official booking flow.
Second Sitting (2S) and Chair Car (CC) are common choices for shorter and medium-distance railway journeys.
Second Sitting provides non-sleeper accommodation and may be available on eligible reserved train services. The fare depends on the train category, distance and booking conditions.
AC Chair Car provides air-conditioned seating accommodation and is offered on selected trains. The ticket price can include the relevant fare components, taxes and train-specific charges.
Executive Chair Car (EC) is available on certain premium and intercity services. It generally costs more than standard AC Chair Car on comparable services, but the actual fare depends on the train and pricing rules.
Quota pricing
Tatkal is a special reservation quota offered on eligible Indian Railway trains and classes. Tatkal ticket prices usually include an additional charge over the applicable base fare, so a Tatkal ticket may cost more than a regular General quota ticket for the same train, class and journey. The amount can depend on:
When you switch on Tatkal booking, this calculator adds a standard class-specific surcharge (10% of basic fare for Second Sitting and 30% for the other supported classes, within a minimum and maximum) for the classes where a standard Tatkal band applies.
Yes. Premium Tatkal uses dynamic pricing under the applicable railway rules. The price can change as reservations are made, so a static calculator may not be able to predict the final payable amount accurately. For Premium Tatkal, verify the live fare on the authorized booking platform.
To check when Tatkal booking opens, use the RailAI Tatkal booking time tool.
Understanding your price
A railway ticket price may contain multiple fare components. The main elements can include the following. The exact combination depends on the train, class, quota and booking channel.
| Fare component | Meaning | In the RailAI estimate? |
|---|---|---|
| Basic fare | Main travel fare determined by railway pricing rules | Yes: the basic fare you enter, or an illustrative distance estimate |
| Reservation charge | Applicable charge for reserved accommodation | Yes: standard charge for the class you select |
| Superfast surcharge | Additional charge for eligible superfast services | Optional: switch on Superfast train |
| Tatkal charge | Extra amount for eligible Tatkal reservations | Optional: switch on Tatkal booking (supported classes) |
| GST | Applicable tax on eligible travel classes and services | No |
| Other permitted charges | Train-specific or booking-related charges where applicable | No |
These are the indicative per-passenger amounts the calculator adds for your selected class. They are not an official fare table.
| Class | Reservation charge | Superfast surcharge |
|---|---|---|
| Second Sitting (2S) | ₹15 | ₹15 |
| Sleeper (SL) | ₹20 | ₹30 |
| First Class (FC) | ₹40 | ₹45 |
| AC Chair Car (CC) | ₹40 | ₹45 |
| AC 3 Economy (3E) | ₹40 | ₹45 |
| AC 3 Tier (3A) | ₹40 | ₹45 |
| AC 2 Tier (2A) | ₹50 | ₹45 |
| First AC (1A) | ₹60 | ₹75 |
| Executive Chair Car (EC) | ₹60 | ₹75 |
An online booking may involve an IRCTC convenience fee and applicable payment-related charges. These are separate from some of the underlying railway fare components, so the railway fare and the final amount paid at online checkout may differ.
RailAI shows a railway fare estimate made of the basic fare, reservation charges and any superfast or Tatkal surcharge you switch on. It is not a complete checkout amount: GST, catering, the convenience fee and payment charges are not included.
Families
Indian Railways has age-based ticketing conditions for children. Under the established child-fare rules:
Train-specific conditions and the actual booking options should be checked before reserving. This calculator multiplies one per-person fare by the number of passengers and has no age-group option, so for a family booking with children, check the child fare in the official booking flow.
Official vs estimate
Yes. Passengers can enquire about applicable train fares without purchasing a ticket. Indian Railways provides an official fare enquiry service where users can select a train number, journey date, source station, destination station, travel class and quota. The RailAI Train Fare Calculator offers an additional way to understand railway ticket prices before starting a reservation. Checking fares in advance can help you compare travel classes and plan your journey expenses.
Not necessarily. RailAI does not have a live authorized fare feed, so its output is an estimate. The actual IRCTC checkout amount can differ because of updated fare data, quota pricing, optional services, convenience fees and payment-related charges. For a reservation purchase, the fare confirmed by the authorized railway booking system is the amount to rely on.
The RailAI Train Fare Calculator is designed to help Indian Railway passengers understand expected train ticket costs before travelling. It is useful for:
Rather than searching separately for multiple fare-related questions, passengers can use RailAI as a starting point for their journey planning.
Check your train fare with RailAI and make more informed travel decisions before booking.
Common questions
Clear answers about base fares, train classes, Tatkal and premium fares, child fares, surcharges and the difference between an estimate and an IRCTC quote.
Ticket fare starts with a class-, distance-, train- and service-specific basic fare from the applicable Passenger Fare Table. Reservation charges, superfast charges, applicable taxes, Tatkal charges and other fees may then be added. A distance alone does not identify the official ticket price.
No. This tool provides an indicative breakdown using the base fare you enter plus standard reservation, superfast and Tatkal charges. It does not read IRCTC's live pricing, quotas or availability. For a reservation purchase, rely on the fare confirmed by the authorized railway booking system.
Yes. You can enquire about fares without buying a ticket, using the official Indian Railways fare enquiry service (train number, journey date, stations, class and quota) or IRCTC. The RailAI calculator is an additional way to estimate costs and compare classes beforehand.
Yes. Search for a five-digit train number to load available route and station distances from RailAI's existing train database. This does not retrieve a live fare quote.
Railway Board Commercial Circular 24/2025 revised underlying basic fares for tickets booked on or after 26 December 2025, following an earlier revision in July 2025. Suburban services and season tickets had no increase, Second Class Ordinary up to 215 km had none, Sleeper and First Class Ordinary rose by 1 paisa per km, and Mail/Express AC and non-AC classes by 2 paise per km. These are increments, not total per-km rates. Reservation and superfast charges did not change.
Yes. Classes have different basic fare tables and tax treatment, and 3AC is generally priced higher than Sleeper on the same train. Select the actual class and obtain its basic fare from an official booking quote for a reliable calculation.
For comparable travel on the same train and route, AC 2 Tier is generally more expensive than AC 3 Tier. Special pricing and train-specific conditions can change this, so review the fare quoted for each class.
No. The 3AC price can vary between trains, even on a similar route, because fare structures and train-specific pricing differ. Premium services and dynamically priced reservations may not follow conventional Mail/Express fares.
Tatkal adds a class-specific surcharge (10% or 30% of basic fare, within a minimum and maximum). Switch on Tatkal booking and the calculator adds it for supported classes. Premium Tatkal uses dynamic pricing that is not included, so verify its live fare on the authorized booking platform.
Yes. Premium trains may use special service pricing, catering arrangements, fare tables or dynamic components. Fares also differ between individual Vande Bharat routes, so do not assume one nationwide price or a generic rupees-per-km rate.
No. Different fare tables, train categories and classes apply, so one rate multiplied by distance does not give an accurate fare. The paise-per-km figures in the December 2025 revision are increments to existing fares, not total rates.
No. The calculator shows basic fare plus reservation, optional superfast and optional Tatkal charges. GST, catering and convenience fees depend on the service and are not included. Check the official invoice for the actual taxable amount.
No. An online booking may involve an IRCTC convenience fee and payment-related charges that are separate from some underlying railway fare components. The final amount at checkout can therefore differ from the railway fare.
Yes. Reservation charges are included automatically for your class, and you can switch on Superfast train if your train carries a superfast surcharge. These are standard indicative amounts.
Children below five generally travel free without a separate berth or seat; if one is requested, the applicable full fare may be charged. Children aged five to below twelve can qualify for child-fare treatment when no separate berth or seat is requested, while a reserved berth or seat generally attracts full fare. From twelve years, adult fare applies. This calculator has no age option, so check child fares in the official booking flow.
Concessions are category-specific and subject to current official eligibility. This calculator does not apply an automatic senior-citizen discount because blanket assumptions would mislead travellers.
Fare-table slabs, booking quota, class, train category, catering, convenience fees, GST treatment, rounding, premium pricing and current railway revisions may differ from your inputs.
Yes. Choose 1 to 6 passengers to multiply the same illustrative per-person fare. Actual fares can differ by passenger eligibility, quotas and berth types.
